Dr. Chia Yan Wah, Michael is the Head of the Signal Processing, RF and Optical (SRO) department at the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), A*STAR, Singapore. He received the B.Sc. Degree (1st Class Honour) in Electronic & Electrical Engineering in 1990 and Ph.D. degree in 1994 from Loughborough University, U.K. He has more than 27 years of rich working experience in R&D, technical leadership, and management in both the public and private sectors with leading MNC & companies in telecom and oil & gas industry. He has led major R&D initiatives at the National Centre for Wireless Communications by the NSTB (hosted by NUS) and A*STAR as Principal Investigator and Programme Director. His most recent industry R&D experience includes leading the R&D of advanced cellular base station RF products from concept, design, prototype to production at a business unit of Kathrein (now part of Ericsson) as CTO of APAC. He has also worked as a senior scientific advisor at the Halliburton (MNC) to lead R&D of new wireless communications & sensor technologies for oil & gas explorations. He was an Adjunct Professor of the NUS where he taught postgraduate courses and supervised PhD/Master students. He has served as member of Technical and Advisory Committees at the IDA (predecessor of IMDA) and chaired/co-chaired international IEEE conferences. He has authored and co-authored 190 international & peer-reviewed publications (84 journals and 106 conferences) and a book. He has contributed to 20 patents: 14 awarded (public sector) and 6 filed (private sector) as inventor/co-inventor.
