HHP I&E Workshop
Emerging Trends in Biomedical and Health Sciences

On 14 August 2024, , , and BMSIPO organized a seminar to explore emerging trends in biomedical and health sciences in Singapore, and how they can be leveraged to advance innovation in our ecosystem.
We were joined by over 80 attendees from biomedtech startups, MNCs, incubators, hospitals, universities, research institutions, investors, and government agencies. The highlight of the event was a panel discussion comprising Dr Sharon Chan, VP , Dr Wang Yingmin, Director of Digital Health at , and Mr Stephen Sunderland, Managing Partner APAC & Head of SE Asia Healthcare and Life Science, .
To kickstart, Dr Chan shared on the top therapeutic areas and modalities that pharmaceutical companies like J&J and investors were focusing on globally.
The panelists then shared their valuable insights and advice for challenges start-ups face; these included validating the value proposition early, devising a good go-to-market strategy, finding the right market fit and building relationships with clinicians for product adoption.
Dr Wang added that good science in and of itself was only one part of the equation. “No matter how great the technology is, start-ups fail when they run out of cash.”
In response to the observation that majority of start-ups would fail, especially in the current challenging climate, both Dr Chan and Mr Sunderland emphasised that real innovation was about pushing the boundaries of success, and that failure is part of the process of innovating.
