A*STAR Bioprocessing Technology Institute (A*STAR BTI)

The A*STAR Bioprocessing Technology Institute (A*STAR BTI) is a national research institute funded by A*STAR with core expertise in bioprocess science and engineering. Established in 1990 as the Bioprocessing Technology Unit, it was renamed the A*STAR Bioprocessing Technology Institute (A*STAR BTI) in 2003.

A*STAR BTI has integrated capabilities to accelerate innovation in biologics, cell and gene therapy, and cultured meat.

A*STAR BTI leverages expertise in both mammalian and microbial expression systems to optimise yield and quality of biological products by vector and cellular engineering. Cell lines and technologies are available for licensing.

A*STAR BTI employs state-of-the-art systems and algorithms to optimise culture media composition and feed strategies. Serum-free, xeno-free, protein-free, and chemically defined formulations have been developed in-house or with industry partners.

DOWNSTREAM PROCESSING

A comprehensive suite of technologies from cell clarification, filtration, chromatography, virus inactivation, to sterilisation enables A*STAR BTI to adopt industry standards for scalable isolation and purification of biological products.

PROCESS DEVELOPMENT & SCALE-UP

A*STAR BTI’s infrastructure permits scale-up and integration of unit operations up to 50 litres in pre-cGMP settings. Both single- and multi-use modalities are available for preclinical process development. A*STAR BTI actively develops scaled-down models for selected unit operations.

A*STAR BTI performs deep characterisation of bioprocesses and products to improve yield, quality and safety. Novel sensors and virtual models are being developed to better understand, monitor, and control the bioprocess.
