Artificial Intelligence (AI) has increasingly attracted investments and affected all sectors in their transformation development and planning, including the maritime industry. Therefore, careful consideration of how AI applications could be adopted in maritime is paramount and require efforts from all relevant stakeholders, particularly because they may share similar resources or rely on similar underlying big data and models.

In this workshop organised by A*STAR's Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC) and ��Maritime Institute (SMI), participants are invited to discuss, identify the challenges and gaps, and share their ideas for developing key capabilities, outlining potential opportunities to advance maritime AI research and the use of domain knowledge and scientific data to support a transition toward next-generation maritime development for ��and the world.

Simulating Quantum Dynamics with NISQ Devices

Simulating the dynamics of many-body quantum systems is believed to be one of the first applications for quantum computers that could show a quantum advantage over classical computers. Noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) algorithms aim at effectively using the currently available quantum hardware. For quantum simulation, various types of NISQ algorithms have been proposed with individual advantages and challenges.

In this talk, Mr. Kishor Bharti from the Centre for Quantum Technologies, National University of SIngapore will discuss the progress at the frontier of digital quantum simulation with NISQ devices and present a summary of their recent results in this direction.

Near-term Quantum Algorithms for Linear Systems of Equations

Solving linear systems of equations is essential for many domains in science and technology. Existing quantum algorithms have demonstrated the potential for large speedups, but the required quantum resources are not yet available on NISQ devices.

In this talk, Mr. Kishor Bharti from the Centre for Quantum Technologies, National University of ��will share how he and his co-authors design near-term algorithms and use them to scale up system sizes in near-term quantum devices of about 100-300 qubits.

Optimal Resource Cost for Error Mitigation

Dr. Ryuji Takagi, from Nanyang Technological University and his co-authors provide a general methodology for evaluating the optimal resource cost for error mitigation employing methods developed in resource theories. It is performed by considering the probabilistic error cancellation as an error mitigation technique. The team also apply the analysis to several other noise model classes and provide generic bounds applicable to general noise channels given in a specific form.

In this talk, Dr. Ryuji will share how the results offer insights into the potential and limitations of feasible error mitigation on near-term devices and also display a useful application of ideas and tools in resource theories.

Transdermal Delivery II - In Silico Methodologies for Investigating Skin Penetration

Topical formulations represent a direct and convenient route to deliver actives through the skin. The stratum corneum presents a major barrier to percutaneous absorption, that can limit the penetration of the active to the deeper skin layers or soft tissues. To assess skin penetration, several in vitro methodologies, including artificial membranes, reconstructed human skin equivalents, animal and human ex-vivo skin tissue, used in conjunction with diffusion cells have been developed.

However, these approaches are limited in providing information of physiological relevance due to a variety of constraints. In this webinar, join Dr. Freda Lim, Dr. Marco Klahn and Dr. Anjaiah Nalaparaju from A*STAR's IHPC and Dr. James Chan from SIFBI where they will share with us the in silico methodologies that can be combined to provide a robust approach for predicting in vivo skin penetration kinetics.

QAE and IQAE: A Blueprint for Quantum Advantage

Current noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) algorithms such as variational quantum algorithms (VQA) employ a classical-quantum feedback loop to update the parameters of a parametric quantum circuit. However, these algorithms have limitations related to trainability and expressibility. In this talk, Mr. Kishor Bharti (NUS) will discuss a new generation of algorithms that could be effectively implementable onto current-term hardware, thus providing possibility for quantum advantage in the NISQ era.

Estimating Quantum Expectation Values using Classical Shadows on Noisy Quantum Computers

The classical shadows protocol is a quantum algorithm for estimating quantum expectation values with respect to an unknown quantum state. Unlike full quantum state tomography, the protocol requires only a few quantum measurements to make many predictions with a high success probability. In this talk, Dr. Koh Enshan, Dax from IHPC will describe the classical shadows protocol and derive rigorous mathematical bounds on its performance on noisy quantum computers.

sectors in varying degrees and people's everyday lives. IHPC has taken a step ahead to understand the virus and invested R&D efforts to help public sector agencies and business owners combat challenges and carry out operational activities with safety measures.

During the virtual presentation under HPC-AI for COVID New Normal, participants get to learn how IHPC demonstrates computational modelling expertise using HPC and artificial intelligence (AI) to promote safe reopening of economic activities and distancing measures.
