Drawing lessons from the pandemic, the Conference, with the theme “Health and Healthcare Beyond COVID-19: Building Forward Together”, will address important topics to raise awareness of the need to invest in as well as collaborate and coordinate for better preparedness and prevention, extending beyond the focus on infectious diseases to include non-communicable diseases.

During one of the oral presentations on 23 Nov, Dr Aravind Sesagirl Raamkumar, Scientist and Technical Lead of the Social & Cognitive Computing department at A*STAR's Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC) shared some insights on 'Social Disease Surveillance and Public Sensing: Now & Future'.

European Optical Society Annual Meeting 2022

European Optical Society Annual Meeting
16 Sep 2022

Dr Thomas Ang, Scientist from the Electronics & Photonics department at A*STAR Institute of High Performance Computing (A*STAR IHPC), presented a talk at the EOSAM 2022 titled 'Towards Integrated Single Photon Avalanche Detectors for Visible Light (Invited)', held at Porto, Portugal.

Integrated avalanche photodetectors (APDs) are essential and ubiquitous devices in quantum photonics applications. While free-space APDs are a mature technology, the development of integrated APDs for visible light is still in its infancy. In this invited talk, we review our work on integrated photodetectors โ€“ the Germanium photodetector for O band, and the first integrated silicon (Si) APD for visible light. A unique feature of the integrated Si APD system for visible light is the end-fire coupling between the silicon nitride (SiN) waveguide and the Si APD in the same layer. This allows for broadband and high-efficiency coupling of light from the SiN waveguide to the Si APD for light detection, without the drawbacks of conventional interlayer coupling. Our work on integrated Si APDs based on Geiger-mode and our progress towards achieving single photon detection for visible light is discussed in the talk.

Development of the Digital Network Twin for Singaporeโ€™s Electric Distribution System
Mr Sebastian Troitzsch
This talk will provide a technical background of the modelling and implementation behind the Digital Network Twin that is being developed at IHPC. The Network Twin can support what-if analysis of the network interdependency arising from recent developments in the energy system - increasing capability in distribution automation, a proliferation of active distribution endpoints, growth of distributed energy resources such as solar PV, flexible loads and electric vehicle charging. One of the projects associated with the Grid Digital Twin is the ๒๒๒ฝอ๘Integrated Transport Energy Model (SITEM), which models the island-wide electrification of vehicles in Singapore. The Network Twin will allow the grid operator to evaluate the impact of these externalities rapidly at a low cost and assess the trade-off at risk to the electricity system.

Modelling and Simulation in Maritime Study and Disease Projection
Dr Yin Xiao Feng
Modelling and simulation have been used for decades to represent some system of interest in a similar but simpler form, and to evaluate the performance or investigate the behaviours under various configurations to be studied over long periods of time. It is the fundamental block of many digital twins that we are developing today. In this presentation, we will share some interesting studies our team have done in the areas of maritime and disease project. An in-house global maritime traffic model using big data analytics approaches is established as the backbone knowledge base to support a variety of applications such as the route prediction and planning, and navigation safety studies. AI embedded simulation and projection of vessel movements, traffic density, hotspot detection and prediction, and collision detection and early warning are developed as tools to assist port authority for safe navigation. We will also share some studies in diabetes modelling and projection and simulation of COVID-19 screening regime for cross-border travellers.

Modelling Train Disruptions through Integrated Multi-modal Simulation
Mr Nasri Bin Othman
Train disruptions are highly challenging to simulate. Major train disruptions can impact hundreds of thousands of commuters, leading to cascading congestion throughout the transportation infrastructure and across other modes. Here we present an integrated agent-based simulation approach to modelling train disruptions. Using our Fabric integration framework, we combine train, bus and taxi agent-based models into a single platform, which we then extend with disruption mechanisms and dynamic disruption-aware commuter behaviour. Our approach enables us to estimate the impact of disruptions on commuter ride experiences, and further enables transportation modellers to compare and evaluate mitigation strategies such as bridging bus services. We also discuss computational optimisations to reduce the runtime of a full-scale 24-hour islandwide simulation to under two hours.
