AI for Human-Robot Collaboration Workshop
Collaborative robots, commonly called Cobots, are robots that are safe for working with humans. Collaborative AI combines Cobots with artificial intelligence for sensing, task learning and understanding, natural interaction and adaptive task execution that enable them to work flexibly with humans in human workspaces. This creates possibilities for human-robot teaming in complex and less structured tasks that cannot be automated but could benefit from intelligent CoBots working alongside humans.
This workshop will discuss progress in Human-Robot Collaborative AI research and explore emerging applications for such technologies.

Prof Giorgio Metta

Giorgio Metta is the Scientific Director of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT). He holds a MSc cum laude (1994) and PhD (2000) in electronics engineering both from the University of Genoa. From 2001 to 2002, Giorgio was postdoctoral associate at the MIT AI-Lab. He was previously with the University of Genoa and from 2012 to 2019 was Professor of Cognitive Robotics at the University of Plymouth (UK). He was a member of the board of directors of euRobotics aisbl, the European reference organisation for robotics research. Giorgio Metta served as Vice Scientific Director of IIT from 2016 to 2019. He coordinated IIT's participation in two of the Ministry of Economic Development Competence Centers for Industry 4.0 (ARTES4.0, START4.0). He was one of the three Italian representatives at the 2018 G7 forum on Artificial Intelligence and, more recently, one of the authors of the Italian Strategic Agenda on AI.
Title: Building Components of Human-Robot Collaboration on the iCub Humanoid Robot
Human-robot collaboration is a challenging task that requires advanced AI techniques to enable natural and effective interaction. One of the main goals of human-robot collaboration is to achieve a shared understanding of the task and the environment, as well as a mutual adaptation of behaviours and goals. In this talk, Prof Giorgio present his approach to AI for human-robot collaboration using the iCub humanoid robot, a platform that offers rich perceptual and motor capabilities. He will describe how we use AI methods such as machine learning, computer vision, and planning to endow the iCub with the ability to recognise human actions and intentions, communicate verbally and non-verbally, and coordinate its actions with those of the human partner. He will also present some of the applications and experiments that we have conducted using the iCub in different scenarios of human-robot collaboration and discuss the challenges and opportunities that AI for human-robot collaboration poses, and outline some of the future directions that he plans to pursue.

Rainer is General Manager Germany at Intrinsic, a robotics software and AI moonshot from X, Alphabet’s moonshot factory. Intrinsic is building a software and AI platform for intelligent robotics, which is key to making robotics more accessible and valuable to millions. Intrinsic became an Alphabet “Other Bet” in July 2021. Before joining Intrinsic in 2020, Rainer was Vice President of Corporate Research at Kuka where he led research and technology development for future robotics products, solutions, and services for almost two decades. Since 2004, he has been playing a leading role in European robotics by coordinating impactful European research projects and by founding and leading the major European robotics associations.
