Professor Andrew Morris is Professor of Medicine, and Vice Principal of Data Science at the University of Edinburgh. He became the inaugural Director of the~£400M Health Data Research UK (HDR UK) in August 2017, the UK’s national institute for health data science. HDR UK works with over 100 organisations to unite the UK’s health data to improve people’s lives, and to enable biomedical research on up to 68M people. It is supported by 12 funders, including MRC, NIHR, BHF, CR UK, Gates Ventures and the health research departments of Wales, North Ireland and Scotland. Andrew was Dean of Medicine at the University of Dundee (2012-2014) and Chief Scientist at the Scottish Government Health Directorate (2012-2017) and has served and chaired numerous national and international grant committees and Governmental bodies. He chaired the Scottish Government COVID-19 Advisory Group, and the Scottish Government Standing Committee on Pandemic Preparedness. His research interests span informatics, data science and chronic diseases. He has published over 350 original papers.

Andrew was previously Governor of the Health Foundation (2009-2017), a leading UK charity that supports quality improvement in health care, and chaired the Informatics Board at UCLPartners, London (2014-2017). In 2007 he co-founded Aridhia Informatics, a health care analytics company.

A medical doctor, Andrew is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and the Academy of Medical Sciences. He was awarded a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) in 2018 and the Royal Society of Edinburgh Medal in 2021. He holds honorary doctorates from the universities of Dundee and Warwick. He was elected as President of the Academy of Medical Sciences in April 2024, one of four National Academies in the UK, and leads a Fellowship of clinical, laboratory, industrial and entrepreneurial scientists with the mission to help create an open and progressive research sector to improve the health of people everywhere.
