Training Must Go On(Line)
A shift arising from COVID-19 pandemic
To contain the spread of COVID-19 through government implemented circuit breaker measures in April, SIMTech’s Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO) established an online training platform for remote course delivery, discussion and
interaction, using several software tools.
Web conferencing platform such as Zoom enabled lessons to continue despite the challenging circumstances. All trainers were familiarised on the usage of Zoom before they conduct online lessons. During discussions, classes were assigned
into smaller groups in breakout rooms. Learners and trainers were able to gain remote-access to each other’s computers for in-depth engaging guidance, resulting in more interactive software demonstrations.
Practical sessions of learning through ModelFactory@ SIMTech and state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities were also made possible via visual demonstrations. Online course assessments were successfully implemented for training course
delivery.
Webinars were also conducted live on Zoom and KTO’s Facebook page to generate awareness of new courses. The outcome was positive as participation was five times more on average as compared to the usual on-site events. Furthermore,
participants benefited from the convenience of viewing the webinars from their homes or offices, saving the need for travelling to the events at SIMTech.
Deputy Director of KTO, Dr Fannon Lim shared that “As we ride through this crisis, we are committed not to compromise the learning outcomes for our learners. We are continuously improving ways that we can engage our learners digitally.
Some of these experiences will be continued in post-COVID-19, given the positive feedback from our trainees for more online training due to their time and family commitments.â€
As the saying goes, in any crisis, there are opportunities. Let’s all make the best out of it!
